Why are we here?
An increased awareness of communities being affected by wildfire has left many of us feeling the need to engage in proactive and meaningful community-based training and information sharing.
It is understood that community members are often the first to report fires, and that members of the public have a duty of care under The Wildfire Act.
Many of us experience anxiety surrounding the unknowns that exist under conditions of increasing complexity. It is in the interest of our own peace of mind and well-being that the flow of information is prompt and accurate.
What to expect:
The S-100 is an accredited, competency based course. It includes a written exam and a practical session. By carrying this wallet card, you will have demonstrated an understanding of:
Wildfire Detection and Reporting
Wildfire Behaviour
Wildfire Organization and Safety
Wildfire Communication
Fire Suppression Strategies
Hand Tool Use
Water Delivery Systems
Hazard Assessment and Supervision
Fire Entrapment Avoidance
What are we trying to achieve?
As a community, we are not expected to be wildland firefighters. We do, however, have a special interest in the information and outcomes surrounding the incident. In the event of an expanding incident near the community, by carrying an accredited wallet card, you are creating space for yourself. Indeed, this delivery will have special focus on:
The role of community members during urban interface situations - For example: What changes when your community becomes a worksite.
What to expect from the interaction of responding agencies in BC, including: BC Wildfire Service, Regional Fire Departments, RCMP, Regional District, and Hydro / Utilities authorities.
An understanding the requirements and protections afforded to you by the Wildfire Act, including liability and reporting.
A safe foundation on which to continue your proactive community emergency response planning process.
