Community Wildfire Resiliency Training

S-100: Fire Suppression and Safety

16 HR Accredited BC Provincial Training Program

+

S-185: Fire Entrapment Avoidance

4 HR Awareness Session

Why are we here?

  • As members of rural BC communities, we have made a conscious choice to live in close connection with the surrounding landscape. Against the backdrop of recent climate trends and adverse weather events, many of us are naturally feeling a sense of anxiety and concern.

  • We understand in that in the event of a wildfire or any incident of increasing complexity, there are a variety of agencies in BC with a mandate to respond. We also understand that as residents, property owners, land-managers and recreationalists, we are the ones with the greatest interest in the outcome of the response.

  • As knowledge-keepers in our communities, we have information that can help first responders.  In addition, agencies have a mandate to provide prompt, accurate information to residents. The goal of these sessions is to provide information about what residents can expect from responding agencies when their community becomes a work site, and to create space and validity for residents to provide a meaningful contribution to the response.

What to Expect:

While it is important to provide all modules of the provincially accredited training courses, we also understand that as a community group, our mandate differs in some ways from the original intent of this coursework. For this reason, participants can expect to be provided a learning framework that includes further discussion on topics such as:

  • What changes can we expect when our community becomes a worksite?

  • What are the legal requirements of Evacuation Alerts and Orders?

  • What are the mandates of the various responding agencies such as BC Wildfire Service, Ministry of Forests, Regional Districts, Hydro Utilities, BC Ambulance, Search and Rescue, CP and CN Rail and others?

  • What kind of legal liability and safety framework is required once we organize as a community group?
